Second Skin
I'd stopped using my laptop since a while back, when it decided to act up and do things like not shut down properly and hang and whatnot.
So today, for a very odd reason, I took it out again and fiddled with it. Uninstalled Avira, which doesn't seem to work all that well on any of my computers, and reinstalled good old AVG Free, this kickass anti-virus programme I don't have to pay a cent for but still seems to work quite well. Ran that and found two trojans, which it summarily dismissed. Uninstalled my Mozilla, which was also acting up, then reinstalled again. Now, my laptop seems to be back in business. Yay.
It has been tempting to go out and buy one of those cute little mini notebooks, except that I do have a laptop and I don't really have a legitimate reason to get one of those things. They're small and light, but my laptop isn't that much chunkier either. And since I managed to fix it, I have even less of a reason to get one.
Hasn't stopped me from drooling over them though. According to CNet Asia reviews, the MSI Wind is the one to get. And apparently they have them in a variety of colours, which really isn't that important, because I'll definitely bring it to that shop in The Cathay to get it wrapped.
If you haven't heard of Gmask, you're probably not the sort with the inclination to beautify your devices. But if you've been Gmasking your stuff, I tell you, screw those little push carts. I've been faithfully bringing every single phone of mine to them to get wrapped, mainly because it's the only sort of protection for my phone that is that thin, and because I didn't know where else to go.
Until I found that shop. Digiskin. And now I'm tempted to tear off my existing Gmask.
The difference is this. At Digiskin, they use some kind of a vacuum-like machine to seal the skin to the surface of your device. At Gmask, they employ teenagers who use hairdryers, penknives and pure brute strength to stick it on your gadget.
And the end result is quite quite different too. The Digiskin people can get the skin to wrap around curved surfaces very nicely, and it looks as though the phone company made the phone that way. Gmask has problems with buttons, even. After comparing the two, there's no contest, really. For me, at least. I don't like the air bubbles and the uneven surfaces the Gmask has.
I guess you might still go with Gmask because they might have a skin you prefer. Thing is, the Digiskin people even allows you to further customize their designs, because they aren't premade stickers, they're printed when ordered, right there and then, so you can tweak the colours and stuff.
Now, why the hell am I plugging Digiskin on my blog? No, they aren't paying me, and besides, I don't get enough traffic to make money off it anyway. (That is, if I find a way to actually put my own ads on Vox.) I guess it's just a nice discovery I thought I'd share with you people. That, and it's a quality service with quality results and they're stuck in a shit location and they need every bit of publicity they can get. It's like a good restaurant that gets shut down because not enough people know about it. A shame.
And no, I'm not looking for freebies either. I can afford $32 to beautify my phone. Yeah, Gmask is about that price too.
Speaking of skins, I was incredibly tickled by this line I came across in some bastard's blog about how this girl's mom said she was conceived because her father didn't wear a condom, complaining that it felt like wearing socks in the shower. I guess that's why condom manufacturers keep coming up with thinner and thinner condoms.
But you know what'll work the best? Not sleeping around with skanky diseased whores and getting a vasectomy. Then you can just go au naturel and there wouldn't be any problems.
EDIT:
After looking at the fantastic job the Gmask people at Bishan Junction 8 did on Elton's phone, I shall take back some of my words. Gmask is good, if you go to the right person. My not that fantastic one was done at Plaza Singapura, where they were really busy, hence, perhaps, not giving my phone the care they should've.
